Enhanced Tidal Disruption Rates from Massive Black Hole Binaries
“Hard” massive black hole (MBH) binaries embedded in steep stellar cusps can shrink via threebody slingshot interactions. We show that this process will inevitably be accompanied by a burst of stellar tidal disruptions, at a rate that can be several orders of magnitude larger than that appropriate for a single MBH. Our numerical scattering experiments reveal that: 1) a significant fraction of s...
متن کاملDetection of Gravitational Wave Emission by Supermassive Black Hole Binaries Through Tidal Disruption Flares
Galaxy mergers produce supermassive black hole binaries, which emit gravitational waves prior to their coalescence. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations to study the tidal disruption of stars by such a binary in the final centuries of its life. We find that the gas stream of the stellar debris moves chaotically in the binary potential and forms accretion disks around both black...
متن کاملTidal Disruption of Stellar Objects by Hard Supermassive Black Hole Binaries
Supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) are expected by the hierarchical galaxy formation model in ΛCDM cosmology. There is some evidence in the literature for SMBHBs in AGNs, but there are few observational constraints on the evolution of SMBHBs in inactive galaxies and gas-poor mergers. On the theoretical front, it is unclear how long is needed for a SMBHB in a typical galaxy to coalesce. I...
متن کاملSupermassive Black Hole Binaries as Galactic Blenders
This paper focuses on the dynamical implications of close supermassive black hole binaries both as an example of resonant phase mixing and as a potential explanation of inversions and other anomalous features observed in the luminosity profiles of some elliptical galaxies. The presence of a binary comprised of black holes executing nearly periodic orbits leads to the possibility of a broad reso...
متن کاملProspects for gravitational-wave observations of neutron-star tidal disruption in neutron-star-black-hole binaries.
For an inspiraling neutron-star-black-hole (NS-BH) binary, we estimate the gravity-wave frequency f(td) at the onset of NS tidal disruption. We model the NS as a tidally distorted, homogeneous, Newtonian ellipsoid on a circular, equatorial geodesic around a Kerr BH. We find that f(td) depends strongly on the NS radius R, and estimate that LIGO-II (ca. 2006-2008) might measure R to 15% precision...
